CONNEX smart thermostats, controllers and heaters are setting a new standard in comfort, efficiency and convenience by offering homeowners wireless and Wi-Fi control of line-voltage electric heaters and baseboards. But like many new technologies, we get asked a lot of questions about CONNEX: how it works, what is needed and so much more.
That is why we’re answering these 14 frequently asked questions about the CONNEX! Don’t see your question? Ask us in the comments below!
1. How many heaters can you connect to a Single-Zone CONNEX Controller?
An unlimited number of heaters can be connected to one Single-Zone CONNEX Controller, but all of those heaters will be connected to one zone. This means that when you change the temperature on the controller, every heater connected to it will be adjusted.
That works great if you’re heating a large shared space without walls – like a living/dining room area, but not so great if you’re talking about heating your entire home. One of the benefits of electric heat, compared to a furnace or central system, is that you can heat individual rooms when they’re in use to save energy.
If you’re looking to use multiple heaters throughout your home, we recommend you use one of our multi-zone controllers, which allow you to create up to four zones. That way you can heat different areas of your home (i.e. bedrooms, living space, basement and bathrooms) independently.
2. Is the CX-WIFI Multi-zone Programmable CONNEX controller compatible with any electric heater?
The CX-WIFI Multi-zone Programmable Controller is compatible with Dimplex CONNEX enabled heaters.
If you’re looking to wirelessly control a standard baseboard heater or fan-forced heater, you can use the CONNEX Smart Thermostat to turn any brand of line-voltage electric heater into a CONNEX compatible heater.
3. What do I need to make the Wi-Fi system work with the CX-WIFI?
To make that work, you need to connect the Wi-Fi controller to a wireless router (802.11 b/g/n) that’s connected to a broadband internet connection.
To remotely control the heaters, you’ll need a smartphone or tablet with an internet browser (Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 4, Safari 5, Chrome 9 or higher).
4. Can you use the Wi-Fi Connex remote controller without syncing it to a broadband source?
In order to control the heaters from a mobile device through the app, a broadband internet connection is required.
5. Can I install the Wi-Fi Multi-zone Programmable CONNEX Controller myself?
Yes! The Wi-Fi Multi-zone Programmable CONNEX Controller is powered by a USB cord that plugs into a standard 120V receptacle. Additionally, you have the option of using a detachable bracket for wall-mounted installation or a support stand to install the heater directly on the wall. No hardwiring means no electricians.
6. I have a Dimplex CONNEX Multi-zone Programmable Controller. Do I still need the Wi-Fi Multi-zone Programmable CONNEX Controller to control my heaters remotely?
That depends on what your definition of “remotely” is.
The Wi-Fi Multi-zone Programmable CONNEX controller (CX-WIFI) is required to controller the CONNEX-enabled smart heaters remotely through the smartphone and tablet app.
The Multi-zone Programmable controller lets you control your heaters with the controller itself, you just have to be within 50 feet of your heaters to do so.
7. Can I use multiple controllers?
Yes, you can have any number of controllers.
If you’re using the CX-WIFI, you’ll need to create a different account for each controller, using a different email address for each, but there is no limit to the number of controllers that can be controlled by the app.
8. Can I run the Wi-Fi Multi-zone Programmable CONNEX Controller off the battery?
No. The CX-WIFI comes with a small cell battery that will last 2-3 hours. The controller is not capable of connecting to the home network off the battery. This is meant to be used only for the synchronization. Afterwards, the controller needs to be plugged in.
9. What happens if I lose my Wi-Fi signal? The heaters will remain on and you can continue to make adjustments through the controller, but you will not be able to control the heaters from the app until the Wi-Fi signal is restored.
10. What happens if the power goes out?
Unless you have a backup generator, the device and your heaters will power down. When power is restored the device will reconnect to the network and your settings will be retained. The clock will adjust to the correct time automatically.
11. What electric heaters, controllers and thermostats will work with the CONNEX App?
The Dimplex CONNEX App is designed to work with the Dimplex Wi-Fi Multi-zone Programmable CONNEX Controller. Once it’s connected to the Wi-Fi controller, the app can control any Dimplex Smart Heaters or any electric heater with the CONNEX Smart Thermostat that are connected to the controller.
12. Will the CONNEX App work with my existing baseboard and fan-forced heaters?
No matter when you purchased and installed them, your Dimplex CONNEX enabled heaters are ready to work with the CONNEX App. Simply add, or upgrade to, the Wi-Fi Multi-zone Programmable CONNEX Controller and you will be able to control your heaters using the CONNEX App.
If you are using a different brand of fan-forced or convection heaters, you will need to replace your existing thermostat with the CONNEX Smart Thermostat. Then, using the Wi-Fi Multi-zone Programmable CONNEX Controller you will be able to control your heaters.
13. What smartphones and tablets are compatible with the CONNEX App?
14. How do I know my information is secure/ private?
We are committed to ensuring your personal information is kept safe. That is why Dimplex connected devices leverage the latest and most robust security including:
End-to-end security mechanisms: Mobile apps and connected devices are authenticated separately. Both the mobile app and the end user’s credentials must pass authorization. The identity of the connected device is best maintained in hardware. The device’s credentials are burned into its connectivity module at the factory, so it’s not exposed to anyone.
End-to-end data encryption: Standard-based encryption from device to mobile app is arguably one of the best deterrents of data theft.
Activity auditing: Auditing data is also an important way identify patterns and pinpoint problems before they happen.
Hardened cloud infrastructure: Dimplex leverages the largest and most advanced cloud provider, Amazon Web Services which is ISO 27001 compliant. ISO 27001 is a security certification standard that specifies security management best-practices and comprehensive security controls for datacenters and other environments.
